OK, so the breakup has officially happened and you are on your “break”. Hopefully you  are doing something to take your mind off of the breakup.  Something like getting a new hobbie, taking a vacation, speding time with friends, etc..

Hopefully this is working and your emotions are now getting more under control, and you are able to think about your ex, in a calmer, more even-keel frame of mind.

If that’s the case, then its time for you to do a little homework. You are going to dig deep within yourself and find out where YOU went wrong in the relationship. Dissect the relationship from top to bottom.

I know its not an easy thing to be objective on this issue, but try to be honest with yourself. Treat this as if it was an assignment for work or school. Try to leave all the emotion out of it, and focus strictly on the facts.

Think of all the great things that happened in your relationship. Most couples have a phenomenal beginning, otherwise known as the honeymoon stage.

What was that like? How happy were you then? What were the reasons you were so happy? What was it that first attracted to you about your ex? Think of all the great things that made your relationship feel (at the time) that it would last forever.

Now, on the flip side. Where did it go wrong? This is obviously not as much fun, but you still have to be mature about this. Don’t say one of the things that went wrong was that “he was a jerk” or “she was a slut”. That’s not going to solve anything. Try to dig a little deeper and see what you find.

It could be something like having different ideas of what your future would be, loss of physical attraction, somebody wanted children and the other didn’t. Obviously, its going to be different for each person, but try to be specific. You may only find a couple of things that went wrong, or a whole laundry list of things that went wrong. When you get them all out, you’ll look at your relationship as more of a project that needs some retooling, and you’ll know what kind of work has to be done.
